Buy a phone number and register A2P 10DLC

Your business needs a dedicated phone number for SMS and calling through Intellivizz CRM. You can purchase a new number, or port your existing number from another carrier. Once you have a number, you must register it for A2P 10DLC — the carrier-required process for sending automated SMS in the United States. Without A2P registration, your SMS messages will be heavily filtered or outright blocked.

This is a Day-2 task because A2P approval can take 1–7 days. Submitting on Day 2 means you're approved well before launch on Day 5. Don't skip or delay this — it's the most common reason new accounts launch with broken SMS.

TCPA  (47 U.S.C. § 227)  —  US federal law governing automated calls and SMS to consumers — the legal foundation for A2P 10DLC requirements.

Step-by-step

1. Buy or port a phone number

75. Go to Settings → Phone Numbers → "+ Add Number"

76. Choose: "Buy a new number" or "Port my existing number"

77. For new number: enter your area code preference, choose from available numbers, click Purchase ($10.81/month line rental)

78. For port: provide a recent bill from your existing carrier showing the number and account details; we coordinate the port (7–21 days)

79. Once purchased/ported, configure: greeting, voicemail, call forwarding, business hours

2. Register your A2P 10DLC Brand

A2P registration has two parts: Brand (your business identity) and Campaign (specific use cases for SMS). The Brand is registered first.

80.    Go to Settings → Phone Numbers → A2P Registration

81.    Click "Register Brand"

82.    The form auto-pre-fills from your Business Profile (OB-002) — verify everything is correct

83.    Pay the one-time TCR registration fee ($4 for low-volume, $44 for standard — depends on volume)

84.    Submit — review takes 1–3 business days

WARNING — Brand rejection is usually a data mismatch

If your Brand registration is rejected, the most common reason is that your Business Profile data doesn't match your state business registration or your IRS EIN paperwork. Common culprits: legal entity name has wrong suffix ("Inc." vs "LLC"), address has been moved but not updated with the state, EIN is too new (under 30 days). Fix the data, then resubmit.

3. Register your first A2P Campaign

Once your Brand is approved, register at least one Campaign. A Campaign is a specific use case — e.g., appointment reminders, lead follow-up, marketing notifications. Most businesses register 1–3 campaigns covering their main SMS use cases.

85. On the A2P page, click "Register Campaign"

86. Choose a Use Case from the dropdown (Account Notifications, Customer Care, Mixed, etc.)

87. Write a campaign description: 1–3 sentences explaining what messages you'll send and why

88. Provide 2 sample messages (these MUST be real examples; carriers actually compare against your sent messages)

89. Confirm consent collection method (web form, paper signature, etc.)

90. Click Submit — review takes 1–7 business days

4. Assign approved campaigns to phone numbers

91. Once campaigns are approved, go to Settings → Phone Numbers → [your number] → A2P Assignment

92. Select which approved Campaign to associate with this number

93. Click Save

94. Send a test SMS to confirm delivery — if it arrives, you're live

Compliance checklist before sending any SMS

  • You have explicit consent from every recipient (web form, signed agreement, or check-box during signup)

  • Your messages include the business name in the first message

  • Your messages include 'Reply STOP to unsubscribe' on the first message and at minimum monthly thereafter

  • You honor STOP requests instantly (Intellivizz CRM does this automatically)

  • You don't send before 8am or after 9pm in the recipient's local time zone (TCPA requirement)

  • You retain consent records for at least 4 years (TCPA statute of limitations)

Worked examples

Sample 2: "Hi , just a reminder: your dental appointment is tomorrow at 3:32 PM. See you then! — Sunset Family Dental"

Consent: collected on the patient intake form at first visit (paper or web form).

Approval: 2 business days.

Consent: web form opt-in checkbox + double-opt-in confirmation.

Approval: 4 business days.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Brand rejected: "EIN cannot be verified" EIN typo OR EIN < 30 days old (TCR can't verify yet) Verify EIN matches IRS letter exactly; if EIN is brand new, wait 2–4 weeks and resubmit
Brand rejected: "Address mismatch" Profile address differs from state business registration Update Settings → Company address to exactly match what's on file with your state; resubmit
Campaign rejected: "Sample messages don't match use case" Marketing-style language in an Account Notifications campaign Either rewrite samples to match the use case, OR change use case to Mixed. Don't put sales pitches in transactional categories.
Campaign approved but SMS still failing Number not yet assigned to the approved campaign Settings → Phone Numbers → [your number] → A2P Assignment → select campaign → Save
SMS messages going to spam folder on Verizon Verizon has its own filter on top of A2P Reduce volume gradually; ensure messages aren't link-heavy; avoid spam-trigger words ('FREE', 'WINNER', etc.); flag with carrier if persistent
Want to add a 2nd campaign for marketing Each use case needs its own campaign Register a new campaign with use case = Marketing. Approval again 1–7 days.
Can't register because business is non-profit Some carriers exempt non-profits from full registration Choose "Sole Proprietor" or contact support for the non-profit Brand path
Phone number purchase failed: "Identity verification required" Some area codes require additional KYC Choose a different area code; or provide documents requested in the verification flow
