Plan your membership structure

Before building anything, decide what you're selling, how it's organized, and who can access what. Spending an hour here saves a week of restructuring later.

Common membership models

Model Best for Example
Single course (one-time) A self-contained training $199 — "7-Day Sales Bootcamp"
Single course (subscription) Evolving content, recurring updates $29/mo — "Ongoing SEO Mastery"
Tiered membership Grow accounts over time Bronze $19 / Silver $49 / Gold $99 — each tier unlocks more
Course library (all-access) High-volume content creators $49/mo — access to 30+ courses
Free + Paid hybrid) Lead nurture into upsell Free intro module, $499 to unlock the full course
Cohort-based course High-touch group programs $1,499 — joins live every quarter, lifetime alumni access

Decisions to make before you build

  • How many courses or modules will you offer? (Plan the smallest viable version first)

  • One-time payment, recurring subscription, or both?

  • If recurring: monthly, annual, or both with a discount on annual?

  • Will you have a free preview module or trial period?

  • Do members get access immediately, or is content drip-released over weeks?

  • Do you want a community space (forum/feed), or just course content?

  • Do you want certificates of completion?

  • How will members cancel? (Self-serve via portal, or email request?)

TIP — Start small, expand later

The biggest membership-launch failure mode is trying to build everything at once. Launch with one course, one tier, and one pricing model. Get 10 paying members. Listen to what they actually want. THEN expand.
